چکیده

The specific objectives of the current effort are: 1. To continue our study of the dynamical processes in tropical cyclones responsible for looping or erratic motion; 2. To continue the development of methods for (a) the introduction of synthetic tropical-cyclone-scale vortices in operational forecast models and (b) ensemble forecasting of tropical cyclones; 3. To continue a sensitivity study of track forecasts with a simple numerical model, focusing on different initialization strategies and using initial data sets from different forecast centres; 4. To continue our study of the dynamics of the extra-tropical transition of tropical cyclones with emphasis on idealized modelling; 5. To continue our study of tropical cyclone intensity change processes and motion in three dimensions via potential vorticity anomalies or vortex Rossby waves; 6. To elucidate the physical mechanisms underlying changes in hurricane structure and intensity, including rapid deepening and eyewall replacement cycles; 7. To diagnose hurricane track and intensity change as predicted by the Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory (GFDL) hurricane model using the technique of potential vorticity inversion; 8. To continue a numerical modelling study of tropical-cyclone trough interaction; 9. To continue a study of the factors which govern the size of tropical cyclones; 10. To continue a numerical modelling study of midget typhoons; and 11. To initiate a numerical and theoretical study of the spin down of tropical cyclone vortices; 12. To initiate collaboration with the German Weather Service (DWD) to improve the prediction of tropical cyclones with the DWD’s global model.

Climatic geography of Tropical Cyclone hazards Affective on the southern coasts of Iran The occurrence of any climatic fringes, including annual tropical storms, leave irreparable risks in its dominated areas. Understanding these events and knowledge of the time of their occurrence can be helpful in managing the unexpected incidents caused by them. Tropical cyclones are important natural turbu...

Rainfall and Dragon-Kings

Previous studies have found broad distributions, resembling power laws for different measures of the size of rainfall events. We investigate the large-event tail of these distributions and find in one measure that tropical cyclones account for a large proportion of the very largest events outside the scaling regime, i.e., beyond the cutoff of the power law. Tropical cyclones are sufficiently ra...

Multiphase flow and tromp curve simulation of dense medium cyclones using Computational Fluid Dynamics

Dense Medium Cyclone is a high capacity device that is widely used in coal preparation. It is simple in design but the swirling turbulent flow, the presence of medium and coal with different density and size fraction and the presence of the air-core make the flow pattern in DMCs complex. In this article the flow pattern simulation of DMC is performed with computational fluid dynamics and Fluent...

Augmentation of Early Intensity Forecasting in Tropical Cyclones

In this project, we develop an objective and automatic intensity estimator of Tropical Cyclones (TCs) based on satellite infrared (IR) imagery. The proposed methodology analyzes the TC’s shape or pattern to perform the intensity estimates, which will be available every 30 minutes (or depending on image acquisition availability) for the Atlantic, Eastern North Pacific and Western North Pacific b...

Computational fluid dynamics simulation of the flow patterns and performance of conventional and dual-cone gas-particle cyclones

One of the main concerns of researchers is the separation of suspended particles in a fluid. Accordingly, the current study numerically investigated the effects of a conical section on the flow pattern of a Stairmand cyclone by simulating single-cone and dual-cone cyclones. A turbulence model was used to analyze incompressible gas-particle flow in the cyclone models, and the Eulerian–Lagrangian...
